Soothing Hot Stone Massage

If you've never experienced a hot stone massage, you don't know what your missing out on! Most people think the use of hot stones in massage is a recently introduced and expensive spa experience, but the use of hot rocks for therapeutic massage therapy has it's origins in the Far East. Ancient writings exist that describe this fabulous technique dating back almost five thousand years ago! Most are familiar with the famous Roman baths, where hot stone therapy was used in the baths of the wealthy as well as part of an athletes training ritual. We also know that Native Americans used hot stone therapy by heating warm stones over an open fire, allowing them to cool down, and applying them to tight, sore muscles.

The good news is that this healing technique has been rediscovered and is increasingly being used by licensed massage therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and many practitioners of alternative medicine. The stones are typically basalt or hot molten lava which has cooled and formed into a smooth ,dark, stone. These stones hold energy and heat and are perfect for therapeutic use. The stones are applied to the muscles to promote a sense of well-being, deep relaxation, and deep tissue healing. The stones warm and help loosen tight muscles, increase circulation, and feel simply fantastic. As your therapist works on you, the combination of heat and Swedish massage strokes work to rid the body of toxins and help to stimulate the body's metabolism. Hot stone therapy is excellent for athletes combined with pre-game stretching and massage, as well as for relieving stress, PMS symptoms, Menopause symptoms, Fibromyalgia pain, Arthritis pain, sore muscles, insomnia, depression, and M.S.

The few contraindications that exist when using hot stone therapy are certain illnesses, the use of hot stones on legs or abdomen during pregnancy, and neuropathy in the legs of individuals with diabetes. If you are unsure about receiving a massage due to a health condition or concern, ask your licensed massage therapist or consult with a physician.

Your therapist will take precautions during the massage for the temperature of the hot stones, making sure the warmth is comfortable to you. Keep in mind that the hot stones must be cool enough for your therapist to handle while working on you. Take the time to check out this luxurious form of massage therapy. You will love the way you feel!
