This is a letter that I sent to Hart's after our dog visited Dr. Lang.....No apology, no accountability....just told I was inaccurate and there was a misunderstanding.....

I appreciate the conversation we had April 5, 2017. I am setting forth below all that we have gone through since we brought our dog, Chubbs, to your office on March 27:

1. We brought Chubbs in on March 27 and explained that he hadn’t eaten since March 21 and that Chubbs had a history of eating socks, tissue and paper towels. We indicated that we first thought it was the food and purchased 2 different kinds of food, however, that was not the case. Dr. Robert Lang indicated that he seemed healthy and ordered bloodwork.

2. On March 28, Dr. Lang called and indicated that per the bloodwork, Chubbs had an underactive thyroid. He asked if I would authorize additional thyroid testing which would cost $85.00. I indicated that I would.

3. On March 29, I received a call from Hart’s that there was not enough blood to perform the additional testing and could I bring Chubbs in to have additional blood drawn. At this point I indicated that Chubbs had vomited 3 times that day (black vomit) and that I didn’t think it was an underactive thyroid. I scheduled an appointment for March 30. I feel that there was negligence in that Dr. Lang did not listen to us when we indicated that Chubbs is a sock-eater and misdiagnosed him with an underactive thyroid.

4. On March 30, I brought Chubbs in for his appointment and Dr. Lang indicated that he looked healthy. I indicated that he was not healthy, as he had not eaten since March 21, was vomiting black and was not active. Dr. Lang indicated that he thought x-rays would be the next step. The x-rays were performed and it was determined that he had a blockage in his intestine. Surgery was scheduled for March 31.

5. We brought Chubbs in on March 31 for surgery. Dr. Lang removed a sock and 12 inches of intestine. We visited Chubbs at 6:00 pm on March 31. He was hooked up to an IV drip and we had been told was given antibiotics and pain medication. Not until I picked up Chubbs’ records, did I see that he was not locked in his cage properly and was found Saturday morning (April 1) lying in the lobby (not hooked up to any essential IVs) and was bleeding. This is pure negligence. Not only was he to be locked in his cage that night and supplied with the proper IV to help him recover from surgery, WE WERE NOT TOLD THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED.

6. On April 1, we picked Chubbs up at 2:00 and brought him home. We were told by Dr. Hart that the surgery went well, however, if we see any adverse signs, to call her personal cell. Throughout the day, Chubbs was lethargic and was bleeding. Dr. Hart indicated that a small amount of blood was normal. At appointment 11:00 that night, Chubbs bled large amounts of blood/fluid over a large part of our kitchen. I texted Dr. Hart a picture and she indicated that this situation was not good and directed us to the nearest ER hospital.

7. On April 2, at approximately 1:00 am, Dr. Brown, at the Animal Emergency & Specialty Center, performed an approximately 3-hour surgery to remove an additional 6 inches of intestine. Dr. Brown indicated that either (i) not enough intestine was taken out the first time, or (ii) that Chubbs was not sutured up properly. Chubbs was given a 50-50 chance after his second surgery. He could not walk, he would not eat, and he couldn’t lift his head. He had a drain put in him because he was septic, in addition to a catheter. We rearranged our lives to be with him twice a day. As he would not eat, we had to force feed him twice a day.
8. We brought him home on April 5, however, Chubbs still had a drain which we had to attend to every 2 hours. He was on four different types of medication, two of which were antibiotics, one was for rebuilding his liver, as his liver was destroyed, and the fourth was for nausea. Even after he came home on April 5, he had to go back the hospital every day through April 9 due to his condition.

9. On April 10, Chubbs had his first appointment at a new vet, who is continuing him on antibiotics and the liver rebuilding medication. On April 21, additional bloodwork will be performed, in addition to Chubbs having his staples removed.

I was very unhappy with the price for dental work on my dog. I wasn't given an estimate and the full price was not affordable by me. I'm low income and will not be going back there with my 2 dogs. I had to pay double for the dental work and will not go back there for dental procedures. Dr. Lang doesn't care about your pet he just wants fast money he kept calling me back to increase the price for a dental procedure. My one dog had a loose tooth and he said it will fall out soon well it didn't and I had to go back there and pay double. Avoid this practice if you want your pet to get good care, apparently it's all about the money.

Been coming here for years but things have changed since Dr Hart sold the place! Brought our elderly dog in for teeth cleaning 2 weeks ago. We were told that she may need extractions but couldn't estimate the total cost due to this. The day of the appointment, I was asked to sign a form stating that we choose IV fluids for her while under sedation (44.00) and aside from the unknown extractions, they could NOT give us an estimate of costs. Fast forward 8 hours...before my wife picked up our dog, I called to have our bill faxed to me. 600.00 for the procedure! (of which 155.00 was the cleaning procedure) They nickel and dimed us for every little thing they could think of, including medications known to be unsafe for elderly dogs, Lidocaine (administered AFTER the extractions) but also gave her pain meds 30X stronger than morphine! Many of the thing that they did would have NEVER been approved by us to our 11 year old dog prior to the procedure. (Had we been informed of these possibilities)

I questioned our bill when I spoke to Dr Hart on the phone. She asked if I was given an estimate prior to, and I told her "no the front desk said they couldn't, but it should be just the cost of the cleaning, IV fluids and extractions" (which came to approx 370.00) She agreed that we should have gotten an estimate and said "I haven't owned the practice in 4 years, if I did, I could have reduced your costs due to what had taken place". Dr Hart told me we would have to talk to Dawn (the office manager) and that notes would be left for her to contact us. My wife picked our dog up that evening and asked to short pay the bill until we had them square up the issues we had, and we were told that we had to pay the bill in full and any refunds would come later. Curiously, when my wife picked up our dog, her fur was soaking wet and was sitting in a cage that way. No blow dry??? It was freezing out and she was shaking when picked up. Cold? Pain? She shouldn't have been with anesthesia, Lidocaine, AND a MAJOR pain killer! Several days went by and I decided to call Dawn myself. After explaining the whole situation to Dawn and expressed that if we were given an estimate before the procedure, we could have shopped around before we committed, and made sure our dog wasn't going to be given things deemed unnecessary by other Vets. Dawn also agreed that we should have been given an estimate and she would "work" on getting us a refund. Fast forward a week and still no calls from Dawn so I decided to call her again. I was told she was in but would call me back in 1 hour. 1 hour turned into 8 and when I was busy at work, she left a message stating that she would call me back the next day at 9am. The next day came and went without a call, but late in the day she left a VM stating "nothing was out of the ordinary, we were OK with the bill since we paid it when we picked up our dog (we didn't have any other choice but to pay in full) and they would refund the cost of meds given to take home totaling 22 dollars". (since she knew we wouldn't give our dog these harsh meds) We have been taken advantage of, and now we take our complaints to the new owner Dr. Grguric, the Veterinary Board of Ohio, and the BBB.

Do not see Dr. Lang. He does not care about you or your pet. A couple of the technicians need to be watched if they are doing anything with you pet. I am looking for another animal hospital.
