Please seek another doctor. Unless you enjoy working with a doctor who is my opinion rude, crass and arrogant.

During my first visit a few weeks ago, I spent hours at the office because the doctor was "running behind". Then today I had an appointment at 1:00. I was taken into the exam room, and was told that I was the first patient of the day, and the doctor had not yet arrived. I waited until 1:50, and the staff said they had not heard from him, so I left. On the way out, I noticed that the waiting room was full of patients waiting to be seen. Although the staff remained professional, I got the impression that it was not unusual for Dr. Ambrose to be significantly late. After reading a previous review, that suspicion has been confirmed. This is the epitome of unprofessionalism, and causes one to wonder what may be going on with the doctor personally.

On January 18, I took my mother for a previously scheduled appointment at Dayton Lung and Sleep Medicine Inc at 8881 N. Main St, Dayton, OH 45415 to see Dr. Martin P. Ambrose. Since my mother, 90, was in physical rehabilitation after a stay of several days in hospital due to cardiac and respiratory problems, this required the use of a tank of oxygen which was provided by the rehab facility and was rated at two hour's duration. Our appointment was at 8:50 am.

We arrived on time at the appointment and checked in. Nothing was mentioned to us at that time about any delays in seeing the doctor and we took our place among the several other people there. After waiting patiently, I approached the receptionist at 9:30 am and asked if we would have to wait much longer. She told me she didn't know because the doctor was not in yet and she didn't know when he would be in. She also told me that there were two other patients ahead of us. Further, she said that they (the staff) never know when the doctor is going to show up to begin taking appointments!

I told the receptionist that this was unacceptable and that my mother was on limited oxygen and was having trouble breathing, even with it. The receptionist simply shrugged her shoulders and said that the doctor would be in when he was in and we would have to wait our turn. I asked that the doctor be called to see when he expected to be available to his patients. The receptionist at first refused but then said she could call but “it won't do any good.” At this point another woman who did not identify herself but who was apparently a staff member approached me and said that the doctor “has patients in several hospitals and that he would be in whenever he finished there.

When I returned to my seat, a woman who was sitting beside me made comment that this was common practice at this establishment and that she had, more than once, waited an hour or more to see the doctor. Another woman added that she also had experienced a similar wait. I told these people that they were allowed to bill the doctor for their time, at a reasonable rate, for their delay in seeing him and said that, as long as people simply put up with it, the doctor had no reason to change his ways. This conversation took about ten minutes and suddenly, my mother's name was called and we were taken into an examination room.

However, once there, we were told that the doctor was still not in and probably would not be in “for some time.” I checked my mother's oxygen level and found that it was at 87. I told the nurse that my mother had been sitting for nearly an hour like this and that I considered this negligence on the part of the staff, especially given my mother's advance age. No one had bothered checking on her (or any other patient) to see if they were experiencing any sort of respiratory problems during their wait.

Finally, at a few minutes before 11, the doctor came into the room. He smiled and shook my mother's hand and then offered his hand to me. As I shook it, I asked, “Running a bit late, aren't we?” He looked at me as though I was speaking a foreign language and said, “Excuse me?” I said, “My mother's appointment was at 8”50, not 11.” His reply was to ask, “Do you know what time I got home last night?”

NO concern for my mother, no concern for the fact that she (and I ) had been grossly inconvenienced, no apology or even a hint of it; simply, “Do you know what time I got home last night?”

Apparently, rather than tending patients at “other hospitals” he had been resting at home while his patients were waiting for care!

At this point, he refused to even look at me until my mother instructed him to listen and communicate with me, which he did very grudgingly. The only examination she got was a moment where he listened to her lungs with a stethoscope and then told her that her lungs “may never come back” No discussion of the lung infection I had informed him of other than to prescribe two medications without further investigation. My mother had also brought information on a portable oxygen condenser which she wanted to get but which needed a doctor's approval before her insurance would pay for it. Before agreeing to recommend it, he asked my mother point-blank if she intended to keep on seeing him, saying that “if not, you'll have to find someone who will certify this (as though it is a difficult thing to do). The implication was clear that, if she said no, he would not certify her getting the unit. Even after she said she would, he refused to certify it until she kept her appointment three weeks later, saying “We don't have to worry about this right now.”

This, in my opinion, is the worst case of negligence and mistreatment of an elderly, vulnerable and ill woman I have ever seen.
