The majority of my reconstructive foot and ankle surgery practice is dedicated to patients with chronic pain. Peripheral nerve related pain is often poorly understood and poorly treated. Patients who are suffering from a mechanical entrapment of a peripheral nerve are often bounced around from doctor to doctor because they may have a systemic disease like diabetes that can make the proper diagnosis more difficult. We strive to educate patients to options for chronic pain including nerve decompression (much like "carpal tunnel release" surgery). A well educated patient can make informed decisions regarding their healthcare. Adjunctive medications like gabapentin or pregabalin can be helpful in managing peripheral nerve pain but will not fix an entrapment neuropathy. Get the facts and talk to your doctor about other options.\n\nDr. Damien Dauphinee\nImmediate Past President, Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons\nBoard Certified, Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery.
