Dr Joseph Dumba first became interested in medicine after needing medical care himself. Originally from southern Sudan, he lived in a village without doctors?nly nurses and medical assistants took care of people in the hospital. Later realizing there was a tremendous need for doctors in Sudan, he chose to be part of the solution. Fearing for his safety as a civil war broke out in Sudan, Dr Dumba sought refuge in the U.S. Though the likelihood of returning to his country was unknown, his goal never disappeared. He completed medical school at the University of Washington and his residency at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education.Today, he is a family practice doctor at Methodist Physicians Clinic.
