I am about to head off to another ER shift. I was witnessed to a poignant event last night as a woman went through the transition of death right in front of me as her loved ones stood in witness and support. It is so common in emergency medicine to have the last moments of life in the ER-- right in the middle of many other, much more mundane events going on.
I count myself privileged to live and work in such an environment where I am witnessed to events beyond the mundane world that most of us allow to occupy our attention. It is too bad that most of us really do not "get it". It is not about boyfriends in a young teenager or disrupted work in a young family due to the influenza. It is about learning and exploring and experiencing the full range of our humanity that ultimately will culminate in a physical death in some ER (probably) somewhere.
We cannot lose the opportunity to consciously grow and learn. It is the only real reality there is since all other things we become attached to fade away and end some day. Finality is not the end of things. It is all about growing and learning. That is why I think there are only 3 solid realities to life: 1) healthy relationships; 2) finding meaning in work and play; and 3) experiencing our own "Higher Self" in whatever construct you believe in: religion, science, atheism, or whatever.
That is why I hope to create the Personal Care Community. I see Wellness.com or parts of it as a tool for people to learn about...themselves. And to take care of things that are really important like the 3 aspects above.
While we will talk about medical nutrition and physical self care, and create opportunities for you to do your own (for example) lab tests: be most aware. It is about you becoming aware of your own "Personal Care" opportunity to grow and learn to the best of your ability.
Thanks. Donald McGee
