An important warning for Americans who love Bush’s Baked Beans: not all of these picnic side dishes are safe. Bush Brothers & Company are reminding consumers of a recall they announced last year on several of its most popular products. Though the FDA “closed” the recall in April, there are still some products out there that could be dangerous. Here’s what you need to know.
- The recall applies to 3 specific flavors: Brown Sugar Hickory, Original Baked, and Country Style Baked Beans. They are all 28-ounce cans.
- Check the lid or base for specific UPCs and lot codes (found below).
- Brown Sugar Hickory Smoked Baked Beans: UPC 0 39400 01977 0 alongside lot codes 6097S GF or 6097P GF.
- Country Style Baked Beans: UPC 0 39400 01974 9 and Lot Codes 6077S RR, 6077P RR, 6087S RR, and 6087P RR.
- Original Baked Beans: UPC 0 39400 01614 4 and Lot Codes 6057S LC and 6057P LC.
- All impacted cans have a Best By date of June 2019. No other dates are affected by the recall.
- A weakened and defective side seam allows the product to leak out, but may also allow bacteria in, raising the risk for botulism and other forms of food poisoning.
Bush Brothers has noted that you shouldn’t eat beans from any of these affected cans, even if you inspect the can and it appears sound in structure. Instead, you should contact Bush Brothers or your local retailer to return the product directly.
