Let my previous experience with this clinic clarify something......this is not a veterinary clinic. This is a backstreet dive run by a "mad professor" that attempts to pass himself off as a vet. This poor excuse does not care about animals and will coldly refuse care to an animal who is in need and suffering. DO NOT take any animal here if you have a choice. This non-empathetic, poor excuse realizes he is the only vet in a couple hundred mile radius and just does not care. He should not be allowed to advertise as a vet nor to practice....PERIOD!!!!

Come with your checkbook or don’t come at all should be the motto of White Pine Veterinary Clinic in Ely, NV. I was driving back to Las Vegas after working in Ely, NV all morning when I noticed something on the side of Hwy 6 about 30mi south of Ely. I turned around and discovered a black kitten just off the road. The kitten appeared to have been thrown from a moving car on the highway, it’s nose was scratched and it was bleeding from one of it’s eyes. The kitten was crying and shaking uncontrollably and pooed the moment I picked it up. Unsure how badly the helpless animal was hurt I decided to seek out the nearest animal services and started driving back to Ely for cell reception. About halfway back to Ely I pulled over and tried calling the only vet I could find in Ely... White Pine Veterinary Clinic. This was at about 230pm on 6/22/12 and a lady answered. I explained that I was just in Ely for work, headed back to Vegas when I found a hurt kitten and needed somewhere to take it. Her immediate response was to coldly ask, “Are you going to take financial responsibility for the animal?”. Not “how badly is the kitten hurt?” or anything but right to the dollars and cents. You’d think that a vet is a business that loves animals but I quickly found that White Pine Veterinary Clinic is JUST A BUSINESS... love of animals is a luxury they apparently can’t afford. I expressed my confusion and dissatisfaction with they’re response stating that, “you are a vet, you’re supposed to help animals” to which she HUNG UP ON ME! I hadn’t raised my voice, I hadn’t cursed, I was just a good samaritan that was distressed trying to find further care for a hurt kitten and this is how I was being treated. I called back with a little more frustration in my voice and confronted her about hanging up on me. I asked her with desperation, “What can I do?” to which she responded, “I don’t know what to tell you”. “Are you kidding me!?!” was my response and when she started lashing into me, I hung up. I called a couple places in Las Vegas that would take good samaritan drop offs but none that would be open by the time I got into town and I’m not even sure at that point if the kitten will even make it to Vegas without immediate attention, much less through the night. At this point I start driving into Ely to insist that WPVC take the kitten and I would deal with the consequences but I decided that even if they do comply they will kill the kitten without question because it is the most cost efficient way to deal with what they consider a nuisance. And I want to express that I understand these places have issues with people dropping off unwanted animals on a regular basis, but I was just a good samaritan who has done all I could do and needed to pass the kitten onto a professional, if they determined euthanization is the best course of action, I’m fine with that, but at least look at it and give it a chance. So now I’m on the side of the road, in the middle of the dessert, in the summer, with a crying hurt kitten and tears in my eyes because I don’t know what to do and my best option refuses to help me. At this point I’m dealing with the moral obligation of trying to keep the kitten alive through the night so I can get it care in the morning or just finding a good sized rock on the side of the road so that I could just end the suffering and I REALLY didn’t want to have to do that but I felt WPVC had given me no choice at that point. Luckily I got ahold of a friend that had found a place in Las Vegas that took good samaritan drop offs of injured animals. Finally I was able to breathe with ease now that I had a place to take the kitten and the kitten’s condition seemed to already be improving after the initial shock when I found it. The kitten’s demeanor calmed to the point that it drifted off in the t-shirt I had wrapped it in and I felt it really had a good chance for rehabilitation. The saints at Las Vegas Animal Emergency Center were kind and caring and asked for no money. I was so relieved to find someone who was willing to help and cared deeply about animals after dealing with the contrast I’d experienced with White Pine Veterinary Clinic in Ely, NV. I understand that the residents of Ely don’t have any other local options for veterinary services but if you can help going to this facility make sure you do because all they are interested in is getting the most money out of your wallet at the highest possible margin. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t visit this clinic, just make sure you go for the right reasons, like to spit on their doorstep or to break a window. WPVC opened a veterinary clinic not because they love animals but because they saw a good way to make a buck in Ely, NV.
