Merrillvile Animal Hospital is an excellent caring place for pets. I have been boarding and taking my dogs there for at least 16 years.. I am distraught that they are no longer boarding.

We recently went to Merrillville Animal Hospital to get our puppy spayed. The location was convenient for us and the facility was relatively clean. The front desk ladies were very friendly as was the veterinary assistant. So why do I give them only 2 stars?

First of all, we were new clients there. Our regular vet no longer does the procedure so we had to find another vet. However Dr. Smith who was doing the spay NEVER once introduced himself....no "hello, I'm so-and-so and I'll be doing the procedure" or even afterwards to just check in and say a quick "the procedure went well." Working at a hospital myself, I know that a doctor's bedside manner plays a huge difference on a patient's overall experience. Yes, some people may say they're 'just dogs' but as many pet owners know, our dogs are part of our family....and an animal hospital's main client. The veterinary assistant tried, but couldn't answer all my questions. I was especially concerned about making sure that no Acepromazine was used since many boxers have adverse reactions to it. However, she could not confirm which anesthesia was going to be used.

Second, was the price. My boyfriend was quoted $245 for the spay of our 33lb puppy. However, as I later found out this did not include the additional $40 for the post-op pain meds (5 days worth). The price itself wouldn't have been such a big issue but it didn't even include a pre-op physical exam or labs (they didn't feel it was needed as long as the puppy was healthy...but how do they know that unless they screen for these things???). If I had the time, I would have cancelled the procedure and gone to Vale Park where for just an additional $50, they would have done a less invasive laparoscopic spay (and there they include the exam and cone).

Also, this hospital apparently doesn't recommend giving a cone to prevent the dog from licking her wounds. This in addition to recommending neosporin. I know neosporin is great at healing wounds but it's not meant to be ingested. Needless to say, I bought an ointment specific for dogs, but still spent the next few days constantly watching and stopping our puppy from licking her stitches. As for the stitches themselves, they somewhat crooked. Maybe I'm being too picky and comparing them to stitches a person would get at the hospital, but our puppy will definitely be left with a pretty big scar.

So would I recommend this place to other pet owners? I really don't know. They're definitely expensive for the services provided. Our puppy is healing fine, but that's just because she's the most AMAZING puppy :)

Was looking for a vet for our rescue Shi-poo, and Merrillville Animal Hospital had very competitive prices. Was EXCELLENT with our dog who usually growls and often snaps - no problems with these vets or their staff as they are calm, knowledgeable and friendly. I also have boarded my dog here on several occasions and was pleased with the price ($20 per night) and my dog was well taken care of and happy to see the other dogs -- again, no growling. In addition, I have used their grooming services which were reasonably and competitively priced and the service was superior to the other I had used before. Great friendly place, great prices, really helpful. They even gave me free ear drops when my dog had a slight ear infection.

Their staff is friendly, courteous and very nice. They are so warm and professional, and made the whole experience that much better. They've never dismissed any of my concerns as unimportant, and took every concern of mine seriously. I felt very assured my cat was being taken care of. I definitely trust them. The receptionist greeted me as soon as I walked in and told me which window I needed to go to (I went to the wrong one lol). She even went through every step in making sure we knew how to dispense the cat's medicine and worked w/us on making our next appointment as convenient as possible for US..even said if we needed to be early because of a later appt, that would be fine too. I don't know why the other reviewer had such bad things to say, maybe they were in a bad mood from the moment THEY walked in because I had a completely different experience here. I can't comment on the unavailability of medicines because he did have what my cat needed and 3 medicines were needed and given to us.

They do not carry a very large selection of medication for your pets and don't carry any of the common brands of flea medicine that I was looking for. It is really inconvenient that they never have what I need. They are almost always unavailable. It was difficult to get an ideal appointment time that fit my schedule. I wish that they had been more courteous and respectful. They used a bit too much foul language for my comfort. I wasn't greeted at all when I walked in the door. No one seemed to notice or care that I was there. The staff here is not that friendly. It was hard to get any conversation out of them.
