I have NEVER been so frustrated and insulted while speaking with a doctor in my life. Dr. Singer has absolutely horrible manners (cutting me off, raising his voice, being rude and condescending at points).
I was diagnosed with hepatitis C a few years ago, and since I recently became insured, My insurance gave me a list of docs that are covered that, and he was one in the area, with over 40yrs exp.
He wrote me a script for a brand new FDA approved med. However each pill is about $1,000, so the insurance requires more comprehensive blood work for pre-authorization, to determine if I qualify for this medicine, or if my disease isn't very progressed, which would mean that I could be treated with several other great medications which are cheaper, while being an effective treatment, which makes sense.
The tests came back, and the insurance told Dr. Singer's office that my request was denied. I was told to call the insurance to find out why. The insurance told me that because my condition isn't severe enough to qualify for this expensive medicine, they gave me a list of about a dozen medications that they will cover for my treatment. They said I could try to appeal the decision, but they told me openly that my disease is NOWHERE near the level needed for this medication.
So they told me to go back to my doctor to discuss my other treatment options.

This is where Dr. Singer completely dropped the ball. I go to his office, and while I wait, I hear his secretary tell him that my insurance denied the med. I then get called into his office. I bring my father with me.
Dr. Singer tells me my request was denied...saying I now need to wait 3 months. to get retested, to see if I qualify for the medicine then. As far as he was concerned, this was no discussion, this was a command.
I tried telling him that I spoke with the insurance in more detail, and they told me I am nowhere near advanced enough to require this medication, and that I don't want to wait (to essentially get worse, to try to qualify), just to hear them tell me that I am still denied. I told him I would rather go with one of the many medications that my insurance will cover. I kept getting cut off, it was difficult getting this across to him.
Dr. Singer raised his voice, told me that there is no reason to play hypothetical games and assume I will be turned down again...saying I am the patient, and he knows best.
I became agitated as I told him I would rather go with an approved treatment. He completely dismissed my opinion, saying that this is the best treatment, and how the other treatments werent as good. I kept reminding him how the insurance will NOT approve me for this medication because I am not sick enough, my levels are nowhere near high enough. He then raised his voice again and pushed again how we should see my levels in three months... I get so frustrated that I stand up, and go towards the door, telling him that he is pushing me a medication that I won't be approved for, and he is unwilling to provide me a prescription for a medication from an extensive list that they already approved.

My father tells me to sit back down and figure this out. I re-explain what the insurance told me.
He again ignores me and gives me a phone number for another doctor, telling me to call him and ask him to call the insurance to see if they will listen to that Dr. to override the decision....which won't happen.
I ended up getting up from my seat again after I confirmed if he is unwilling to write me a prescription for an approved medication. He once again made it seem as if this was the only treatment on earth for Hep-C. To him, it was either this treatment or none. So I leave.

He did not give any importance to the fact that I don't qualify for this medication by my insurance...asking me to wait three months to see if I am sick enough at that point to qualify. why would I wait to get worse? I won't be sick enough to qualify for this medication unless I wait another 5 years for treatment (according to the Dr I recently consulted, who was in shock and disbelief regarding this story, who told me he would write me a prescription for a great medication which will be covered by my insurance.)

Not only was he rude to me, he was rude to my father. He completely ignored the information I gave him which I received by the insurance provider regarding medications approved, and he acted as if this was the only treatment in the world, and how he had absolutely no backup treatment in the event I'm denied this medication, regardless of the fact 9 out of 10 people aren't approved for this medication. Does he treat all the other patients that aren't approved the same way? Did nobody ever receive treatment before this medication was approved earlier this year?
This was a horrible experience, a waste of time, and it's obvious that Dr. Singer's old age gives him the feeling that he has the right to be rude to his patients and their family.

Not at all! There were barriers everywhere making it impossible for handicapped people to enter
