I was referred to Dr Melki with a severe case of floaters in both eyes. I had previously had the laser surgery to dissolve the floaters, but in my case it made them worse (for many others it works great). The floaters looked like locks of dark hair constantly floating around in my eyes. It was so distracting and annoying that it was affecting me mentally. I was depressed knowing that I had to live with these for the rest of my life. Dr Melki observed them and could see how much they were bothering me mentally. Though Vitrectomy is a last resort for floaters he told me the risks and we agreed to do both eyes. I had both surgeries approximately 6 months apart and they were both a success. The floaters are gone! I had the local anesthesia so I just woke up after it was over. There was a little discomfort after surgery which is normal and I wore a patch over my eye until the follow up visit the next day. After that I wore a patch only at night for protection. For the next week or ten days there was just a slight discomfort, as if you had a small piece of dirt in your eye, this is the sucher from the surgery, is normal and slowly dissolves. There are a few different eye drops that you will need to use multiple times a day and I followed the directions religiously. This is a tiny price to pay to be relieved of the floaters. I saw no complications from surgery. I could immediately notice the floaters were gone and it took approximately two weeks for my vision to return to normal, but was able to see fine until then. I returned to work in a couple days. I'm 46 and I did develop a cataract in one eye a couple years after the vitrectomy, but I was told up front that this surgery would likely mean that if you are genetically determined to get cataracts that they will likely come earlier. However this was another small price, IMO to pay. Cataract surgery is the most common procedure in the word, it was a breeze and I can now see much better that before the cataract. I would recommend such a serious procedure only if you just can't live with your floaters. If the floaters are a large mass the laser is your first option. Mine were not and it was a mistake to do the laser. Dr Melki is very knowledgeable, has a good bedside manor, and provides excellent follow up after the surgery. Plan to be at his office for 45-60 minutes at each appointment, most of the wait is due to the time it takes to dilate your pupils. I could not be happier with the experience and outcome. Removing the floaters has given me such a better quality of life! THANK YOU Dr Melki!
