I was quite enthusiastic about making my appointment with Dr. Newman, since he came highly recommended by a colleague of mine. So, I decided to look him up, and give him a call.
First strike... Well, I don't know if I can issue strike one based on this, but the phone number listed on the internet for Dr. Newman was not, in fact, the number for Dr. Newman, so I had to do more digging. Don't really know what that was all about (the shuffle, I mean), but I chalked it up to user error (on my part).
Definitely strike one: Even the correct number didn't elicit speaking to an actual representative after a few calls, so I left a message stating I'd like to make an appointment. I left my name and number at the beginning and end of my message in an effort to be thorough. I waited a full week (with no holiday), and still didn't hear anything back. I decided to continue trying to see this particular physician based on the glowing recommendations. So, on the eighth day after I left a message and didn't hear back, I decided to walk in to make my appointment.
Strike two: I walked up to the front door of the establishment ~12:15. The lights in the lobby were out, so I thought maybe they weren't even open, but I saw the office light on at the front desk so I tried the door, and it was open. Strange that all the lights are off, but there could be a million reasons why, so I shrugged it off. I heard a bell tone, indicating the front door to the establishment had been opened. I walked in and saw a person in a pink shirt sitting at the desk behind a frosted glass window. I walked right up to the window, which had a sign stating, 'Please do not tap on the glass' So, I stood there and waited to be acknowledged by the person sitting at the desk behind the frosted plate glass, and even cleared my throat. I also moved around so that she could clearly see that I was waiting. There was also no sign posted stating what time lunch is, or when I should expect to be assisted, etc. so I continued to stand there after signing in. When it became clear the person in the pink shirt would not assist me for whatever reason, I had a seat in the dark lobby. Feeling like I didn't want to give up, I waited there for the duration of their lunch break so that I would be first assisted after their lunch break. I sat there for an hour when another patient came in and signed in. Lights still off. I was assisted AFTER said patient. While the girl in the pink shirt assisted me, she suggested that I fill out new patient paperwork now so that I can minimize my wait time on the day of my appointment. Done. I then set up my appointment to be first thing in the morning (09:00) so that I wouldn't have to wait behind anyone, and could get on with my busy day. Total time in office was ~01:30:00. Behind no one.
Strike three: Get a call two days prior to appointment confirming the time, with a request to please show up 15 minutes early. I show up at 08:30 thinking office opens at 08:00, but the doors are locked. Ok, my fault, should've known office business hours, whatever. 08:45 doors are still locked, lights all out, even the office lights are out. Begging your pardon, but shouldn't someone be there to greet a patient at the time the patient is requested to be there? Anyway, I tried not to mind because I was hoping for some sweet redemption by the Dr.'s bedside manner/competence/results. I try to get in again at 08:50, and still no one has unlocked the door, but as I was walking away I saw a physician in green scrubs (not Dr. Newman) walking toward the door to unlock it to let me in. He didn't say 'hello,' but commented on how freezing it was outside, and then proceeded to walk back into the clinical area of the building. I signed in. I was the only patient there for a good 15 minutes (by then it was ~09:05), and still the lights were out in the lobby and in the office area. The office personnel finally showed up, turned the lights on, got situated and pretty much sat there without acknowledging me. Two more patients arrived, signed in, and were greeted by the front desk personnel. I continued to sit. The clock was ticking and finally two pharmaceutical reps, dressed in suits and carrying their bags of pharmaceuticals, entered the lobby and exchanged communication briefly with the front desk personnel. They were admitted to the clinical area of the building immediately. One of the patients who came in 15 minutes after me was called to the back by the RN/CNA. I asked the girl behind the desk when I can expect to be seen, and she told me, "The nurse is looking at your paperwork now..." I waited another ten minutes. By this time it was 09:35. I finally had to walk over and cancel my appointment.
I never even met the physician I made the appointment with.
I am usually in the habit of giving people the benefit of a doubt. I've been in the business of helping people for nearly twenty years, and I've been working in health care for nearly five years. I make allowances for poor service at times because I know, especially in health care, things don't always operate as smoothly as we want them to behind the scenes.
I am miffed at all three of my experiences with this establishment, though. My wait time exceeded 50 minutes. My appointment process was very unsatisfactory. Service was not prompt or courteous. I was unable to assess the physician's professionalism because I never saw him. For these reasons, I would give the facility less than a one-star rating if I could.
I hope you have a different experience.
