A gynecologic oncologist will use a pelvic exam, various tests and imaging tools to detect and diagnose cancerous tissues. This specialist may use medical or surgical interventions that include chemotherapy, radiation treatment, lymph node dissection, surgical staging, laparoscopy including robot-assisted procedures, paracentesis, hysterectomy, removal of pelvic masses, and other surgical and non-surgical interventions to help rid the patient of gynecological cancers.

A gynecologic oncologist must first obtain a medical doctor degree and complete the necessary hands-on training. This is followed by at least 4 years in an approved OBGYN residency program. An additional fellowship with intensive training in cancer research and treatment options takes an additional 3 to 4 years.
