This specialist may use medical or surgical interventions that include chemotherapy, radiation treatment, lymph node dissection, surgical staging, laparoscopy including robot-assisted procedures, paracentesis, hysterectomy, removal of pelvic masses, and other surgical and non-surgical interventions to help rid the patient of gynecological cancers.

A gynecologic oncologist must first obtain a medical doctor degree and complete the necessary hands-on training. This is followed by at least 4 years in an approved OBGYN residency program.
