Progesterone and Weight, Prostate Health, and Heart Disease

Progesterone in men helps keep blood and prostate levels of estradiol low by increasing the rate of conversion of estradiol into estrone, which is less active. High levels of estradiol in men appear to lead to increased risk of enlargement of the prostate gland and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as greater fat retention around the waist.

The main signs of low progesterone levels in men include:
  • Gradual build-up of fat around the breasts
  • Prostate irritation causing difficulties with urine flow
