I always loved science - as well as a TV show about a neurosurgical chief resident, Ben Casey, that was popular in the 1960s. So, I may have been predisposed to a career in medicine. I recall an episode in which Dr. Casey restored a patient's eyesight. I was fascinated. In my own practice, I listen closely to each patient and tailor treatment to them based on their input and goals. I take care in being responsive to patients and prompt with replies to their concerns. Beyond that, I stay on top of new techniques, including Minimally Invasive Surgery and robotics. I have helped lead clinical trials, including trials for spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation which included novel treatment for phantom limb pain experienced by some amputees. My wife and I have been married for more than three decades and have four adult sons and (currently) one grandchild. We enjoy being active members of our church and family outings such as vacations, hiking, visiting amusement parks, sports and walking our dogs. I'm a lifelong learner and love to study topics related to my field, plus a diverse range of unrelated topics. I also enjoy Sudoku puzzles - and the more difficult, the better.
