I provide supportive care to patients with a wide variety of illnesses (i.e. cancer, advanced dementia, end-stage renal disease, end-stage liver disease, and end-stage lung disease) while they are also receiving treatment for their illness from the primary providers. We will discuss what quality of life means to the patient and discuss advanced care planning. We focus on optimizing symptom management and addressing goals of care to help patients and families navigate their illness. Symptoms that we address include fatigue, the sensation of feeling short of breath, cancer-related pain, opioid-induced constipation, appetite, sleep, and emotional and spiritual distress.
