About Angel Roberson

Angel Roberson, FNP, said she has always been in a caregiving role. Her first job was caregiver to adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Her career in medicine officially began when she worked as an inpatient nurse at IU Health University Hospital. “There, I got to form really beautiful friendships with my teammates/staff,” she says. “I wanted to further my career into a provider role as I wanted to advocate for my patient in a way in which their concerns are listened to and enacted.”

While working at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis, she was able to participate in a clinical research trial and saw firsthand the amazing advances in cancer treatments. This experience and her interactions with patients led to her choosing oncology as her specialty. Angel valued the attitude of her oncology patients. “They always tell it like it is, which I like and appreciate. …you only have one chance to live and it’s important to be purposeful with words – to laugh, cry, and embrace every moment there is,” she says, adding, that life can be incredibly hard sometimes.

Angel is a first generation Asian American and is proud of her heritage and the sacrifices her parents made to grant her the opportunity to pursue her dreams. While she is the first person in her family to choose a medical profession, she said all of her female cousins are in health care in some form – either in pharmacy or as physician assistants.

Her philosophy as a provider is to be there for the people she treats. “Holistic care means seeing them as more than their diagnosis, getting to know them as a friend and helping them achieve their health goals,” she says. “There is something satisfying and beautiful about walking alongside my patients in their health journey and supporting them in their decision of their health, whatever it may be. I am there for them.”

In her own words…

Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life?  I can’t pick, because it’s like asking, “Who is your favorite child?” Thus, the most influential people in my life who I am eternally grateful for are my parents!

What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it?  Being a caregiver for my lovely clients who have autism. I remember and love the moments of making my clients laugh or them making me laugh.

What is your favorite food? Movie?  Hardest question of my life – I have these food jags, basically where I can’t get enough of a certain food and will eat it for like months until I get tired of it.  The first movie that popped into my mind is, 13 going on 30.

What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up?  I am embarrassed to say this, but my worst subjects were history, government and math. My best subjects were English, biology and anatomy/physiology.

If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why?  I would love to have a dinner with my husband’s late Grandpa CJ, whom I never met. It would have been great to get to meet and know the man who greatly impacted my husband and my father-in-law.

In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about?  Trying new foods from different cultures, hiking (enjoying how beautiful nature is, specifically Yosemite National Park), and DIY projects for home improvement!

What are your hobbies, interests?  This is going to sound silly, but I love coloring with gel pens, crayons, markers, and colored pencils. I also love to go on walks with my friends, husband or our Chihuahua, Chimmy, (in no particular order).

Another interest is my love for finding new ways for self-care such as meditation and reading books ranging from “Power of Now,” by Eckhart Tolle, to books written by James Patterson.

What is something most people don’t know about you?  I have only been to one football game in my entire existence (an IU football game in Bloomington), and it was for 30 minutes.
