Palliative care is often underutilized because of a lack of understanding. Many patients, when hearing this word, associate it with dying. Palliative care is not the same as hospice care, but, rather is an extra layer of support for patients and their families. This type of care should be part of the continuing standard treatment plan from the time of diagnoses of a life-changing serious illness. - Shagun Saggar, MD
