Dr. Maytal grew up in Israel and New York City. He graduated with high honors from Harvard College, and attended medical school at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Maytal completed an Internship in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), a residency in Adult Psychiatry at the MGH/McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Program, and a Fellowship in Psycho-oncology and Psychosomatic Medicine at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Maytal joined the faculty of MGH and Harvard Medical School. During his 11-year tenure at MGH/Harvard Medical School, Dr. Maytal served as the first Psychiatric Liaison to Palliative Medicine at MGH and cared for patients in the MGH Cancer Center.During his tenure, he developed and expanded multiple clinical programs. He served as the Director of Primary Care Psychiatry, Director of Urgent Care Psychiatry Clinic, Medical Director of MGH Behavioral Health Integration Programs, and as the overall Medical Director of Ambulatory Services.During these years, he completed two additional fellowships – one in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the MGH Center for Psychoanalytic Studies, and another in Medical Ethics from the HMS Division of Bioethics. He served as an active member of the MGH Ethics Care Committee for over 10 years.Dr. Maytal joined the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine in May 2018. He brings his experience and expertise to NYP/Weill Cornell as the Chief of Integrated Care and Psychiatric Oncology. In this role, he developed the Psychiatry Collaborative Care Center into an integral resource for the mental healthcare of WCM Primary Care patients and he oversaw the growth of Psycho-oncology services at Weill Cornell Medicine.Dr. Maytal transitioned to the Voluntary Faculty in April 2023 as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. He continues to teach students, residents, and fellows in psycho-oncology and medical ethics -- as well as serving on the faculty of the Consultation-Liaison Service. Dr. Maytal has written widely in his areas of clinical expertise. He has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed papers, review articles, and book chapters in various areas of psychosomatic medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Maytal is a dedicated and passionate teacher who is committed to training young physicians, as well as to the ongoing education of practicing physicians. He is has been actively involved in the teaching and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and staff physicians. For his various efforts and accomplishments, Dr. Maytal was recently honored as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
