I came to nursing as a second career because I wanted to make an impact on the world around me. My earlier training in literature and history helps me appreciate my patients' stories. It also gives me some insight into the human condition. Geriatrics gives me the chance to spend time with wonderful patients. Many of my patients are dealing with complex medical and social issues. I enjoy helping to solve these complex problems and getting my patients the right kind of care at the right time. Clear and open communication is key to providing good care. Getting buy-in and understanding from a patient's support system means that patients are more likely to follow their care plan. By listening to their stories and learning about their lives, I can better treat the whole patient, not just their symptoms. I value the opportunity to understand and honor my patients' health care wishes.
