In 1986 he earned his cardiologist degree from Instituto De Cardiologia y Cirugia Cardiovascular de la Habana, Havana, Cuba. After leaving his native country and living abroad for a few years, Dr. Fernandez was board certified in Internal Medicine in Puerto Rico in Hospital Municipal de San Juan, Puerto Rico; he later moved to Miami, Florida to practice as an Internal Medicine doctor.
