Dr. Purnell is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, focusing on Knee and Shoulder disorders and Cartilage problems. After earning his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, he completed his surgical internship and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He then went on to complete an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia where he gained additional experience in Sports Medicine, Arthroscopic Surgery, and minimally invasive techniques to treat Knee and Shoulder injuries. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the Arthroscopy Association of North America where he is an Associate Master Arthroscopy instructor. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. His research work has been published in medical journals and he frequently presents at Orthopaedic conferences throughout the country, with particular interest in Patellofemoral disorders and Cartilage Restoration procedures. He currently serves as the co-director of the Allegheny Health Network Center for Cartilage Restoration. Dr. Purnell currently sees patients at our Monroeville and White Oak office locations and operates out of Forbes Hospital and the Monroeville Ambulatory Surgery Center, where he is a member of the Medical Executive Committee at both facilities. He currently serves as a team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates and local high schools.
