Michael Numnum, MD, was born and raised in Birmingham, Ala. He attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where he received his bachelor of science degree in biological sciences. After his undergraduate training, he attended medical school in Birmingham, Ala. at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. After completing a four year residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Birmingham in 2005, Dr. Numnum went on to complete a three year fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Alabama Hospital.
During his residency and fellowship, Dr Numnum received numerous honors and awards including the 2006 Department of Surgery Resident Research Award for his work in gene therapy in ovarian cancer. He also chaired a committee in developing a minimally invasive training curriculum for resident training. In addition to numerous oral presentations and abstracts, he has authored or co-authored more than 35 publications in scientific journals. In 2010, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in 2011 he received his subspecialty certification in gynecologic oncology. He voluntarily maintains his certification on an annual basis. Dr. Numnum is also actively involved with his specialty on a national level, currently serving his third year on the Coding Committee for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology as well as the Gynecologic Cancer Care Collaborative Group, working to educate physicians nationally on gynecologic cancers.
Dr. Numnum is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists and Nashville Academy of Medicine. He was named a DaVinci Robot surgical provider by Intuitive Surgical.
Dr. Numnum and his wife, Cydney, are the proud parents of three children. Although his children keep him quite busy, he also finds time to get out on the golf course occasionally and is even learning to play the acoustic guitar.
