About

Geraldine Merola Barton, Clinical Psychologist

I am a psychologist licensed to practice in New York since 1987.

During 25 years of practice, it has been my privilege to help my clients feel better, think and communicate more clearly and positively, find solutions, achieve their goals, and understand themselves and others in ways that enable positive change.

My therapeutic approach is flexible, enabling sensitivity and responsiveness to each client's needs. Psychotherapy can help with three crucial components of positive change:

1. Insight into unconscious motivations, thought patterns and behaviors that prevent positive change;

2. Designing a plan for change that can actually work;

3. Acquiring skills that will enable change.

I saw this therapist for several months for issues that I did not have fully organized in my mind at the time, but now I know were mainly anxiety and PTSD caused by developmental trauma. One thing she said has always stuck with me: when talking about work, my abusive boss (he was fired eventually), and feeling constantly on guard and unsafe with coworkers, Geraldine used a clearly exasperated voice and said, "They wan't to like you you know!" ...I now know that developmental trauma was not understood a couple years ago when I paid handsomely by the hour for this woman to help me, but her lack of empathy and obvious irritation with me in a vulnerable environment was unforgiveable. Lesson: There are a huge range of issues that would lead you to see a therapist, and most therapists only understand a few issues well. This means most therapists will be a bad fit for you and will not be helpful. Keep looking, and eventually you will find someone good. The process of finding a good fit can take longer than starting to get results when you finally find who understands your needs. It is up to you, because most of them are happy to bill you indefinitely for therapy that goes nowhere, and even makes you feel worse.
