This Woman Needs Therapy Herself

The funny thing about my life after I saw O'Brien is that I emotionally suffered alot more than I would have had I not seen her. I was sexually abused as a child and was really seeking to confront my demons once and for all. This woman victim blames like its nobody's business. I guess at 10 years old a certain level of responsiblity is yours for being sexually assaulted by a relative. What's more, when I finally got the guts to confront my relative in court for the pain he caused me from raping me all those years, O'Brien's therapy notes changed. In her notes, she stated I had sexual ideations about my own father since age 4 (really?) and that I initiated sexual contact with him. She also stated that I referred to my father as my boyfriend in all our sessions. Really? Her notes were not electronically dated and I know she altered them. When I asked her how she could do that to me she giggled and said "my dear, I really can't afford a court subpoena, it's too much lost income". I hated her after that. I lost the case and my father was emboldened. Maybe karma does go around though because O'Brien had such a bad bout with constant cancer she had to quit her "prestigious" job at a local university.

Dr. O'Brien Should Not Be A Therapist

Dr. O’Brien was my therapist during a time in my life when I was tackling trauma and living in an abusive situation. If you are searching for a therapist who can help you with trauma, doesn’t judge you, respects you, is honest and trustworthy look elsewhere. Please, learn from my experience and mistake.
• Disempowering attitude towards survivors of trauma: she convinced me to not report or pursue any justice against a school teacher who physically assaulted me resulting in serious injuries. Instead, throughout numerous sessions she forced me to examine my responsibility for the assault. I steadfastly refused knowing it was not my fault; any violent behavior belongs to the abuser. But as Dr. O’Brien would say, “you volunteer for assault when you don’t know the red flags”. How could I volunteer or know the warning signs when it was the first time I had been assaulted and at the hands of a trusted teacher?
• She’s very judgmental/ not a good listener: She couldn’t remember my history or what we discussed in the previous session. She often stopped sessions to take a phone call and re-scheduled sessions at the last minute because she didn’t remember what day I said I was coming.
• Not respectful or culturally sensitive: she did not respect my culture or religion and the importance of virginity to me, insisting that sex before marriage was “a good learning experience”.
• Not trustworthy: she told me to stop being so fearful of the abuser in my house and threaten him by calling the police. Her advice escalated an already bad situation. Having a safe plan to escape was more important.
• Not honest: she told me I had PTSD; I told a medical professional and my insurance provider. In her notes she didn’t diagnose me with any condition. It made me look like a liar when she denied it.
*When I left Dr. O’Brien she was struggling with recurring cancer. I don’t know if she is still a practicing therapist.
