I love Salisbury Animal Hospital. I have taken my dogs there for a few years and always had a great experience, however, recently I encountered Dr. Charles Steinman. My dog had recently been diagnosed with cancer during quarantine and I had some questions. I went in and as he looked over my dogs chart, he then said, "I dont like to read, so tell me whats going on." I then said Im going to need you to read her chart because Im here to ask you the same thing. So, he proceeded to say, "Well then let me get someone smarter than me." I was taken back but I figured he was just having a bad day. I had just gotten a call that my dog was dying of terminal cancer and had about 3 weeks left to live. This was serious, I wasnt there for her checkup due to quarantine regulations so I needed to know what the chart said...
Fast forward a few weeks, we had taken our baby to all of the fun places that she liked and loved on her and said our goodbyes. She was tired, she was ready to pass over the rainbow bridge. This is something we had experienced before and was a very peaceful transition. It is always hard to say goodbye to your best friend but I knew she couldnt be in pain anymore. We made the appointment.
When we got there we chose to have her cremated and got a pawprint. We waited on the floor on a blanket as we said our last goodbyes. Dr. Charles Steinman comes in. He never greeted us, or her. He never asked questions other than if she had bitten anyone. He never gave condolences. He never even talked to her to make her feel ok in her last minutes. He asked us to put her (a 60 pound dog) up on the exam table. I said that I wouldnt because her lungs were filled with fluid and its hard to pick her up without causing pain. (If he had read her chart, he wouldve known). He was annoyed that we asked him to do it on the floor while we were loving on her. I know he is older but if that bothered him, he shouldve asked someone else to do it. He then came in with electric shaver. Why did she need to be shaved? He didnt answer. She is a short hair dog and has never needed to be shaved for blood work or shots. She is also afraid of loud noises but he didnt care. As he pulled out the needle, I realized it didnt look like the sedative but he wouldnt talk to us. I said, "wait is that the euthanasia or the sedative. He grabbed her arm, jabbed it in and said she will be gone in 5 second. He never said anything and left the tourniquet on her arm and walked out the door. NO SYMPATHY, NO CARE, NO EMPATHY. He took away the peaceful process of saying goodbye by not giving her the sedative and had no empathy in the process. He may have been a good doctor at one time, but he obviously has done this for too long that he no longer cares about the animals. He will never touch another of my pets and I hope he never does this to anyone else. I hope that he takes this opportunity to retire and not put another family through such a tragic situation.
