WARNING: this review includes sensitive topics including mental illness, sexual dysfunction, and suicide.
Carlos Y. Roby has one primary concern in his practice, and it is not money as others claim, it is to have the lowest possible recidivism rate among people who complete his program. He is, of course, concerned with money and providing for his family. He has rules in therapy that help with this, and cooperation from the justice system to enforce extension to mandatory therapy. One rule that encourages dishonesty and baits clients into foolishly giving him power over them is that viewing pornograpy is not allowed, period. If one is foolish enough to be honest with Mr. Roby, he rewards them with an extension to mandatory therapy and monthly polygraph tests.
Mr. Roby uses polygraph tests, generally performed by off duty or retired police officers, for the one thing they are good for: intimidation to self incrimination. While this is immoral and a clear violation of the 5th Ammendment of the Constitution of the United States, Mr. Roby takes advantage of the fear and loss of rights many of his clients suffer. These polygraph tests can go on an hour or more, with no satisfaction until self incrimination is achieved. There is significant science showing that polygraph tests, being a form of psychological torture with similar results to physical torture, are not reliable for extracting truth from victims of the practice. There is much more than this that Mr. Roby engages in, including penile plethysmograph tests. These involve physical invasion to place a sensor on a client's penis, and then showing disturbing images including child pornography to attempt to elicit a response. This is also based on bad science and a misrepresentation of erectile biology. These two practices, and many more that Mr. Roby engages in, are disgusting in both means and ends.
To help achieve a low recidivism rate for 'graduates' of his prorgam, Mr. Roby manages three different ways a person can be free of his unrightous domain: complete his program by satisfying Mr. Roby or surviving the court ordered time required (often 1-2 years), commit a crime and end up in prison with Mr. Roby testifying to your depravity, or... suicide. The suicide rate among his clients is disturbing, and how often he shares the accounts of suicide and otherwise subtly encourages it in group therapy is reprehensible.
While I was a client of Mr. Roby there were 5 suicides by people in the therapy groups I was in, according to my journal from that time. Given he ran multiple therapy groups at the time this count is likely much higher, and in the decades since then who knows the extent of this issue. To my knowledge no public information is available about the suicide rate among Mr. Roby's clientele.
One can only theorize why this is the case. There are serious issues I observed as a client. One is that Mr. Roby did NOT screen for mental illnesses such as Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. These two disorders are well known to involve both hypersexuality and suicide. In my opinion this oversight is consciously or subcounsciously intentional. Both of these disorders are life-long issues and difficult to treat. Mr. Roby knows that people with these mental illnesses are likely to reoffend and damage his precious recidivism rate following graduation from his program, so the better solution is entice to either suicide or reoffense during the 1-2 years he has influence. With nearly 1 in 5 people with these disorders successfully committing suicide, nearly 1 in 3 attempting suicide, and the vast majority considering and planning it when in crisis. This is an effective means of improving his recidivism statistics because suicides are officially not his fault and do not count as a negative according to the state and organizations like LDS Family Services that refers many people to Mr. Roby.
Not only does Mr. Roby not consider these critical and unfortunately common mental illnesses because of his obession with sexuality and his recidivism rate, he demonizes and denigrates his clients in private and group therapy. For example, he demonstrates his disdain for his clients by telling jokes like "how to you reduce population in prisons?" I won't share the punch line, it is reprehensible and unbecoming a person who claims to be what Mr. Roby claims. Worse, this sort of attitude about people he considers less than himself permeates his discourse and causes significant psychological harm to his clients.
This demonization and dehumanization is not just shared with his clients about themselves and other clients, it is also shared with families which he holds groups for and with the public to justify his reprehensible practices. This tears apart families and helps other justify mistreatment of his clients by all around them. For many this results in not just divorce or expulsion from family, but total expulsion from the society they are familiar with. This is often based on lies, telling family to look for things like the abuse of a client's own children even when their mistakes had nothing in common with such behavior. To Mr. Roby, those with sexual behavior issues are all the same and all capable of the most reprehensible of acts. This attack against social support causes harm to clients, and that is a significant factor in the decision to end one's life.
There is a common saying to beware wolves in sheep's clothing. This is not the real danger. The real danger, and one that is not commonly discussed due to the influence of 'shepherds', is wolves in shepherd's clothing.
I submit this review anonymously because I do not trust Mr. Roby given the authority and influence he has to destroy lives using both psychological manipulation and abuse of the justice system. I was a court ordered client a couple decades ago (misdemeanor exposure), working with Mr. Roby based on a recommendation from LDS Family Services. Mr. Roby will almost certainly dispute this review saying I was never a client, and attempt to gaslight as he has done to countless others in his practice and in public statements.
If you considering hiring Mr. Roby for yourself or a loved one, decide first if you are okay with him treating you or your loved one as described here, or at least discuss with him these concerns to protect yourself and your loved ones.
