I had an appointment for ADHD assessment with another Huntsville provider and the wait was about 6 months. I called Dr. Ferguson as he was listed on my insurance and was able to see him two weeks after I booked my appointment. I am a young woman and have had bad experiences with male therapists, and was a bit wary to be honest. After sitting with Dr. Ferguson for about ten minutes, all my worries were eased. He is very friendly, personable, and never made me feel unsafe. I've also heard horror stories from people looking for ADHD assessments. He listened to all my concerns and never once downplayed my experiences. I've heard that many therapists and psychologists are hesitant to diagnose women with ADHD and want to just write it off as anxiety instead. He asked if I had considered that my symptoms were due to anxiety, as sometimes anxiety can cause inattentiveness and poor memory. I gave him my explanation on why I didn't think anxiety was a factor, and he took me seriously. Overall, I saw him three times: once as an intake appointment, once for my actual assessment, and finally to receive my diagnosis. I saw him once a week so this all happened pretty quickly based on my previous experiences with mental health professionals.

We had some problems with getting the insurance sorted out and about two months after my diagnosis, I received a call from him to talk about it. I told him that he needed to speak to my mother as I'm on my parents' insurance and she handles it all. After I gave him her number, I expected the call to end, but we spent about ten minutes on the phone as he asked about how I was doing and feeling. He and I had agreed that therapy is not beneficial for my ADHD symptoms, but on the phone, he once again encouraged me to reach out to him if I ever needed anything. When I spoke to my mom later, she said that he just needed some quick information from her about our insurance and had a similar conversation with her about how I'm doing (I had given him explicit permission to speak with her concerning my care). We both felt that he genuinely cares about his patients and their well-being. He's a breath of fresh air compared to other experiences I've had and helped me so much.

Also, the previous place I had an appointment at was not on my insurance and out of pocket, the cost of my assessment was quoted as between $1,500 to $2,000. When I completed my assessment with Dr. Ferguson, my mother asked for the total in case the insurance fell through and we had to pay out of pocket. He apologized in advance for how high the cost was and said it would be $300 total.
