Dr. Mathews caused great harm to my mother who trusted him to do a simple correction of her prolapsed bladder. His negligence, along with the negligence of Dr. Michael Gross, was inexcusable. Sadly, Dr. Mathews punctured her bladder with a suture which caused Dr. Gross to be called in to do a bladder repair. Between the two of them, a second hole in her bladder was made AND overlooked which caused her peritoneum to fill with urine for five days before she had to undergo emergency surgery to save her life. He was negligent in discharging her with low sodium and non-managed pain. He was further negligent when he minimized, or ignored, my concern that she was not well and in constant, extreme pain. "I don't know what you want me to do...she's topped out on narcotics. The ER won't be able to help her." His negligence caused her to be admitted to CCU two days after he operated on her...due to the low sodium causing altered mental state/loss of sensorium. His negligence caused her to undergo an emergency surgery to correct his error/botch, spend three weeks in the hospital and two weeks in the skilled rehabilitation facility, miss seeing her granddaughter receive her high school diploma and associate's degree, and lose strength, muscle, and fitness she had worked so hard to have to maintain life as a vibrant, feisty 74-year-old. Interestingly, a week ago, I learned that my dentist's mother had a worse experience at the hands of this man. She trusted him for a bladder lift, but he "accidentally" sewed her urethra closed. She could not urinate for three days, had to undergo subsequent surgeries, and now wears Depends two years later due to incontinence caused by his incompetence. Why is he still licensed by the State of Texas?
I have seen Dr. Mathews several times and at every office visit he was punctual, considerate, easy to talk with and he made me feel very comfortable. He explained everything in an articulate manner and answered all of my questions and concerns completely. His ability to put me at ease was and is very appreciated. I recommend Dr. Mathews without hesitation. He not only is a great doctor, he is a great human being - so down to earth!
