I really didn’t want to write this review, but I think that it’s important that people read it. I know this place and the family that owns and operates it really well, and I have to say that if you have any other recourse or option at all when it comes to placing your family members in a facility of some kind or another, please utilize it. In an ideal world, elderly parents would be able to live at home with their own children. While I realize that this is not always an option in the modern era, this particular facility should only be considered when family members have no other alternative due to finances or some other issue. When it comes to the Myerling, appearances can be deceiving. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes here that family members will never see or know about. Being as the Myerling Home is licensed as a boarding house and not as an assisted living or nursing home, there is very little state oversight or accountability, and this is a major disservice to both residents and employees alike. The Myerling has operated for many years as a family business, and such you are dealing with a close-knit group of people that work to keep the goings on here covered up and swept under the rug. This applies not only to dealings with the residents but the employees as well. The management here has a history of leading employees into romantic or sexual relationships only to find creative means to dispose of them and cover their own tracks when they no longer feel that they are in control of the matter. This creates an incredibly toxic and hostile work environment, which certainly has an effect on the residents. This is NOT a place for people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. While the management readily admits people with these conditions, the facility and staff are in no way equipped to provide the kind of care that people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia really need. There are facilities out there that specialize in this kind of care, and those are your best options. Sadly, I have heard the management comment more than once that they actually prefer residents with these conditions because they don’t remember anything, speak up, or make trouble. As the conditions of some residents worsen, measures are taken and corners are cut to keep these residents in the facility longer than they should be. The bottom line here is the dollar and not the well-being or dignity of the resident. This is not only unfair to the resident, but bear in mind that this place often runs with only a single employee on duty to be responsible for about 18-20 residents; if 10 residents are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, that means that you have a ratio of 1 worker to 10 patients with special needs and as many as 10 more without these conditions, potentially making for a 1:20 caregiver/resident ratio. This is tragic and would never be permissible at a facility like Luther Oaks, another elderly home I have a good deal of experience with. A place like Luther Oaks is adequately equipped and staffed to handle conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and additionally has adequate state oversight and accountability. In summation, if you absolutely have to choose the Myerling, that is a decision that you must make; but think about the sacrifices that you loved ones have made for you throughout your life and, if it is at all within your means to do so, strongly consider finding them a place to live that will be able to give them the attention and care that they need. They deserve better.
