Another ophthalmologist referred me to Dr. Goldberg for cataract surgery. Dr. Goldberg accurately diagnosed me with a rare cornea disease that would require surgery in 1 or 2 eyes before he could do cataract surgeries in both eyes. Dr. Goldberg did my first cornea surgery, and it went very well. He had an undisclosed health problem that prevented him from completing my surgeries and finishing the job that he had started.

I had the first of 3 or 4 planned eye surgeries with Dr. Goldberg in Sept., 2014, and had additional appointments scheduled. Dr. Goldberg had a health issue and was cancelling various appointments for several months, leading to a lengthy leave of absence. Although Dr. Goldberg knew well in advance that he would have to cancel all of his appointments for at least the entire month of November, 2014, he delayed notifying his patients until shortly before their appointments and wrote that it was due to an unforeseen circumstance. His office refused to re-schedule my appointments with Dr. Goldberg, did not refer me to another eye surgeon, and offered me only an office visit with his Physician's Assistant. This delay prevented me from completing my surgeries and improving my vision in 2014. I will pay thousands of dollars for an additional insurance deductible in 2015.

Dr. Goldberg's delay in notifying me and his failure to refer me for appropriate care elsewhere were just two examples of a poorly run office and lack of consideration for the patient. Dr. Goldberg diagnosed me with a rare cornea disease, explained it, and instructed me to sign up for surgery; I asked for written information on the disease and the surgical procedure, but they said that there was no patient information. His employee sent me to purchase a $108 prescription which I did not need, and I have never opened the bottle. I posted a question in his online Message Center about my medications, but no one responded. They gave me printed post-op instructions to use an eye medication but did not warn that it would cause blurry vision; when I contacted Dr. Goldberg's office to report my blurry vision, a tech gave me medical advice that was different from what Dr. Goldberg wanted me to do. When Dr. Goldberg wanted to check my post-surgical eye again in 4 weeks, the scheduler couldn't get me in before 6 weeks. After Dr. Goldberg cancelled my appointments, I requested that my records be sent to another ophthalmologist and to me; the records were not sent in a timely manner, and they charge 50 cents per page to give patients their own records. My usual time in the waiting room was 45 minutes to 1 hour with additional waiting time in the dilation and exam rooms for a total of 2-1/2 to 3 hour office visits. A sign says to notify the receptionist if you have been waiting for longer than 15 minutes, but they don't do anything about it.

Dr. Goldberg is a knowledgeable physician. He provided me with excellent advice and surgery for which I am grateful. I would be willing to overlook many of the inconveniences at his office in order to receive his expert care. However, the way that Dr. Goldberg treated me when he had a personal health issue led me to believe that he had priorities other than my best eye care, and I could no longer trust him. I do not know the nature of his health issue or how it has affected his ability to take care of his patients in the past, at present, or in the future.
