Had a TERRIBLE experience at Border Animal Hospital. My mom made an appointment to put her old and sick dog to sleep. We arrived on time and when we were finally brought to a room, the tech says, "Well, what's going on with Maggie today?" What?!! Did you not READ the reason for the appointment?! Told her the dog was to be put down, she then said she needed to get her temperature. Are you kidding me?! We would not allow it - didn't want to put the dog - or mom - through any more stress and there was no reason to take her temp. Tech left. Another one came. Asked why we were there today - told same story to them. They left. Doc comes in and starts asking about Maggie's medical conditions - even telling my mom that there are medications she could put the dog on. Seriously. This is a hard decision to come to, and it wasn't done lightly. To have the vet second guess an elderly - and clearly upset - owner over her decision is not okay. (Maggie had dementia, arthritis, severe pain, loss of bowel and bladder control, and she was 14 yrs old....and her quality of life was gone.) All the while during this emotional appointment, staff members kept entering the room to access a supply closet. Very disruptive and invasive during such a hard time for my mom. When they finally realized that the dog was to be put down, they asked if we wanted to be with her - of course we did. But they took her away for an IV first, which i thought was cruel. Why not just place the IV in the exam room where we were so mom and Maggie wouldn't have to be separated in the last few minutes of Maggie's life? Once she was gone and it was time to pay the bill, we were shocked to find out that the prices we were quoted on the phone for the euthanasia were only STARTING prices.......there were many hidden, unstated fees that pushed the cost $100 over what mom was told. That's a tough pill to swallow for someone on a limited budget and right after saying goodbye to your best companion. We aren't from the valley, but if we were, we would NEVER EVER EVER go to Border Animal Hospital - we'd drive to Harlingen or McCallen to find vet care. Border Animal Hospital took a difficult and emotional situation and made it excruciating. They ought to be ashamed. (i would give them NEGATIVE stars in the rating if that were possible - one is far too high for the "service" rendered.)

We had had a very upsetting day trying to get attention for our cat Max. When we arrived at Border Animal Hospital we were very grateful to find someone who cared. Dr. Edlestein was very informative and thorough. We had to leave Max and when I called later that evening Dr. Edelstein helped to put my mind at rest. Max had to have surgery and spent 4 days with this great staff. The care was teriffic.
