Dr. Lavitt wanted to be a veterinarian since he was seven years old and his parents supported his goal by allowing Dr. Lavitt to care for a menagerie of pets: fish, dogs, cats, a guinea pig, rabbits, gerbils, hamster, frogs, a chicken, turtle, birds, a raccoon, horses and a even a hermit crab. Dr. Lavitt has always been fascinated by nature, animals, and science. He worked at an animal hospital for eight years starting at age sixteen. This gave him the perfect opportunity to watch, listen and learn, as well as contribute some of his developing skills to that practice. The University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana accepted Dr. Lavitt into their veterinary program in 1970 and he graduated with his D.V.M. degree in 1974. After graduation, Dr. Lavitt was employed by two highly experienced veterinarians, one of whom was a board certified surgical specialist. Over the following two years, Dr. Lavitt was employed at The Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago, seeing thirty patients per day and performing surgery on at least 2,000 patients during those two years. Dr. Lavitt's dream of actually getting to know his clients and their pets by providing unhurried time in the exam room became a reality when he began his own practice at Lavitt Animal Hospital in Morton Grove in 1977.

I've been taking my dogs and cats to Dr.Lavitt for about 25 yers. Wouldn't trust my "family" to anyone but the best. No matter how busy he is, he finds the time to fit us in because he loves animals. If I were to compare him with human doctors, I'd have to say he's no different with animals except that his bedside manner cant be beat and he's more accommodating. When my dog got hit by a car, I was totally broke. He had me bring the dog in, checked her out thoroughly, and showed me what to do to keep the wounds clean and bandaged. Great Dr.!
