In mid January VITAS was contacted by my neurologist, to inquire about hospice services for me. The MS I am affected with has gotten to a point where I am in a wheelchair, having painful spasms am unable to leave my home with my 15 year old and my 2 year old In addition to MS I also have RA and Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) all of which have brought me to a point where my health will not improve and the only hope is to slow the progression of these diseases for as long as possible. I am on Medicaid because my family has lost everything from work, home, cars, friends and family since these illnesses struck me.Try hard to imagine the feeling of another let down when after 4 hours of paperwork and promises and Ms. Hayes going in and out of the house numerous times to make “secret” phone calls being told that because of my medication (Rebif) I could not get the services she spent 4 hours promising us. If the feeling is not something you can imagine attribute it to never having loss so great that your life is completely ruined and practically hopeless.Be very clear, I do not feel like I am somehow entitled to VITAS services. Medicaid would have paid for it if I was eligible. The problems lay squarely within the fact that I WAS TOLD I QUALIFIED, I WAS PROMISED SERVICES THAT WOULD BE A GREAT RELEIF TO MYSELF AND MY FAMILY, I WAS GIVEN SOME SORT OF HOPE ONLY TO HAVE IT PULLED AWAY AT THE LAST MOMENT LEFT ONLY WITH DISAPPOINTMENT. Donna did stress that VITAS had very deep pockets, helping many many people without regard to cost and the bottom line was not a consideration; blatantly taking us for idiots.
As a company claiming to have nothing but compassion, it would prove useful for them to CHECK BEFORE MAKING PROMISES. BEFORE GETTING THE HOPES OF A PERSON UP JUST TO WALK AWAY LEAVING NOTHING BUT MORE DISAPPOINTMENT.
To add insult to injury, I was later contacted my Kim Scarborough to see if I qualify for any other services. While she was much more professional than the previous representative from VITAS, (not going in and out making phone calls, etc..) I was again given hope for a visiting physician, shower chairs, ramp, etc... I have heard nothing. Let me say that again, Nothing from anyone regarding such services. Again, promises and services offered but more disappointment.
If there was a possibility of VITAS not making enough money off of my situation, promises should not have been made, paperwork should not have been signed, period.
