I've always believed that if a doctor actively listens to the patient, and really hears the unique and very personal story being told, then the diagnosis will more easily be revealed. So what gets in the way? Time. When a physician has the opportunity to get to know the person who has the symptom and not just focus on the symptom itself, a collaborative relationship between doctor and patient is established, empowering them to make truly informed medical decisions together. Shared decision making, guided by the best available scientific evidence and medical literature, informed by the physician's experience and expertise, and respectful of the patient's values and preferences, leads to superior clinical outcomes and the best chance for the patient's goals to be achieved.
As an independent physician, my patients can be confident that the advice and information I offer are objective and unbiased. I do not benefit from the diagnostic or treatment options I recommend.
