Dr. Rhorer trained with some of the world’s leading physicians and professors as a Duke medical student, and he was so impressed upon by the Duke tradition that he chose to stay there to train in the internationally renowned Duke orthopaedic surgery program. As a resident orthopaedic surgeon at Duke, Dr. Rhorer received awards for both research and teaching. He was the first Duke resident to travel to Kurgan, Russia to spend two months as a fellow at the Russian Ilizarov Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics. During his training, Dr. Rhorer developed a passion for complex problems and trauma. Consequently, he was accepted to a one year trauma fellowship at Tampa General Hospital/Florida Orthopaedic Institute.
Dr. Rhorer takes a distinctive approach to creating innovative solutions, and his credentials extend further than his impressive list of experiences with the world's leading orthopaedic trauma surgeons. Phoenix area patients tell the real story behind what some people call this surgeon's calling.
During his fellowship, Dr. Rhorer trained with five orthopaedic trauma surgeons who are highly recognized for their contributions to complex fracture work. He participated in nearly 1,000 surgeries in twelve months. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Rhorer returned to Arizona and founded Sonoran Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons in Scottsdale. In the years that followed, SOTS grew to five fellowship trained trauma surgeons, a trauma fellow, four physician assistants and coverage of four of the five level one trauma centers in the valley of the sun. He also serves as the medical director of orthopaedic trauma for Scottsdale Healthcare. As the director of orthopaedic trauma, Dr. Rhorer and his team were instrumental in achieving Scottsdale Healthcare’s American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center status.
Dr. Rhorer has published in the orthopaedic trauma literature and he is widely known for his speaking and teaching abilities. He has been an invited lecturer in forty states, five countries and four continents outside of North America. His primary interests are management of complex fractures of the lower extremity, pelvis and acetabulum. He has a special interest in treatment of nonunion of fractures and he has extensive experience with limb salvage, deformity correction and limb length discrepancy. He is proficient in the use of the methods of Ilizarov and the Taylor spatial frame for segmental bone defects, post-traumatic osteomyelitis and nonunion.
Dr. Rhorer has several interests outside of clinical orthopaedics. He is the liaison to the Arizona State Trauma Advisory Board representing orthopaedic trauma, he runs two limited liability corporations, works as a legal consultant, has consulted for television and is actively involved as a consultant in medical device development including design, market research and feasibility. An Eagle Scout, he is an avid lover of the outdoors. His wife and three daughters live in Scottsdale where they ride horses and play volleyball often.
Dr. Rhorer has endeavored to create a world class institution for complex fracture management and post traumatic reconstruction in Arizona. He is proud of the men and women of Sonoran Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons, and he is thankful for the privilege of treating victims of complex orthopaedic trauma.

Dr. Rhorer grew up in Chandler, Arizona. After graduating in the top five percent of his class at Corona del Sol high school in Tempe, he attended The University of Arizona in Tucson. He majored in molecular and cellular biology, and he was actively involved in several on campus organizations as a leader among his peers. He received several awards as an undergraduate, graduated magna cum laude and was accepted to several of the nation’s best medical schools.
