About
After moving to Northern California, I founded the East Bay Psychopharmacology Group and was its Medical Director for 25 years. I evaluated and treated thousands of children and adolescents, working closely with families and medical and mental health providers. For more than two decades, I taught the graduate course in pediatric mental health at UC Berkeley Extension and was a faculty member at the Dept. of Psychiatry of Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
I have been married for 33 years and have two grown children. My wife Charan and I are also publishers of educational children's books. Our book The Reading Lesson is the second bestseller in its category in the U.S. and number one in the U.K. My recent book, Brainfulness: The intuitive guide to the nature and diagnosis of mental illness is published on Amazon Kindle.

I have an M.D. degree from the New York University (Langone) School of Medicine, started as a pediatrician and later moved to psychiatry. My training in pediatric psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and developmental-behavioral medicine was at UCLA. My specialty is child psychiatry and psychopharmacology. I offer consultations and guidance to families with children who have behavioral, developmental, and educational problems. I do my consultations over the internet (e.g., www.zoom.com) or on the phone. The families can request an in-office (in SF East Bay Area) evaluation for an additional fee.
FIRST OPINION
For a parent, the first encounter with the mental health system can be perplexing; the terminology and treatment options are confusing and daunting. Who to trust and where to go?
When entering the new psychiatric terrain, you need a guide – an experienced professional to help you navigate through foggy waters of modern mental health.
I will listen and explain in plain language what is happening with your child and what can be done. Later on, when (and if) you meet with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or therapist, you will know what to expect and the important questions to ask. I will help you understand the problems (the names and nature), and help you sort them out by priority and severity, short and long term impact.
I will try to ease your worries and help you set up realistic expectations. We will talk about treatments and what to expect if you choose to do nothing. If necessary I will prescribe medications and make a referral. After talking to me, you will be well-informed and empowered by a clear understanding of your family's needs and have a master plan for your child.
SECOND OPINION
You are concerned about your child’s feelings, behavior, and learning; you might’ve seen a psychiatrist or other mental health professional and received a diagnosis and treatment. Yet, you wish someone else would take another look. Perhaps your child saw a primary care provider - pediatrician or family practice - and you want a consultation with a pediatric psychiatry specialist.
That’s not because you have received bad advice or poor care; it’s hard for a parent not to wonder if there was something else, something that your doctor or therapist might have missed or misdiagnosed. Maybe you felt rushed, didn't ask important questions, or were not satisfied with the answer.
