A Disappointing emphasis on money. I was assigned to Dr. Kurtz when my original urologist left this practice some years ago. In my meetings with him I found him to be a good listener and someone I felt I could trust.

UNFORTUNATELY when I called for an appointment this year I was told that he didn't accept my (very common) insurance. I told the scheduler that I already knew that as it had come up in the past but I was willing to pay cash for continuity of care with him, as I had done in the past. She told me she would have to get Dr. Kurtz's approval; she phoned back about 2 hours later to say he won't take cash patients. This was a simple exam so the issue wasn't ability to pay. The bill would probably have been around $100.

My friends in the business tell me that there is generally more money for the doctor in insurance billing than in cash billing. He effectively dropped an old but infrequent patient without even asking or caring what my needs were so he could maximize his profit. A disappointing attitude for a doctor.

I have been a patient of Doctor Kurtz of (Las Vegas Urology) for seven years and found him to be skilled, kind and fair. His staff however is a different matter.
I called to make an emergency appointment (there was a death in the family in Atlanta GA, and I would be gone for as long as a month) my PSA was 16.3, up 2 points in only a few months. I first called on Wednesday to make an appointment, the best they could do was schedule me for the same day as the funeral in Atlanta. I requested to have the office manager call me, but I was not contacted. I called on Thursday and again tried to make an appointment and was transferred to the nurse. I explained my distress and worry and requested to see any doctor in their group (Las Vegas Urology). She explained that my PSA had been high for some time and that was my problem. For Doctor Kurtz to see me would mean that they would need to double book, and they never do that. I was also told that seeing another doctor in the group is confusing for the staff. Again, the office manager did not return my requested call.
I contacted my primary care doctor, who returned my call at 8:00am on Friday morning, did the exam and gave me a new referral, all before noon.
On my return from the funeral had received a registered letter saying that I was no longer a patient of Doctor Kurtz, however, they would see me for an emergency for 30 days. I called within this time frame (with a possible urinary infection) and was told there was no way for me to see Dr. Kurtz.
If you know Doctor Kurtz, please bring this to his attention as I see my being abandoned by his office as a cover-up for the nurse’s inappropriate behavior. This is my only way to contact him. Is office policy more important than that of a long-time patient’s needs?
