I went to Doctor Mattice at Urgent Care West to potentially be set up as a new patient, and establish him as my primary doctor. I also had a rash on my forehead I suspected was a staph infection, at the time. The front desk staff was very friendly, and told me it would not be an issue for him to check out my forehead and do a new patient visit today. I gave them my Blue Cross Blue Shield Select card and asked them if my plan was in-network. They took the card, had it for a while, and then gave it back to me, telling me they had checked and I was definitely in-network. I asked what the co-pay was and they gave me the correct answer: $0 (for my first three visits). Happy, I asked them to set Dr. Mattice up as my primary physician, and they said they would. As I was finishing the paperwork, I was called in to the doctor. The nurse was kind, and I informed her and Doctor Mattice that my mother had come here and said good things about him, which is why I came. Dr. Mattice was brusque and in a rush. He told me he was expecting an important phone call and might have to leave the room, which he did after a minute of looking at my forehead. He did not feel my (swollen) glands or take a swab or anything, just examined the rash, and left me no time for questions, telling me it was staph, quite possibly MRSA, and wrote a prescription before leaving the room in a hurry, presumably to continue his phone call. I was in a bit of a daze at the rushed nature of the visit, and had to find my own way out. I would Dr. Mattice's bedside manner as off-putting and a bit rude. He asked no questions about me or my general health, nor did they try to set me up to come back for the actual new patient visit and eventual wellness exam I was hoping for. I felt nervous when I left, and on the way out again confirmed that I would not be paying a bill since this was in-network, and they are a "payment due at time of visit" office. Also worried that he had not examined me properly while rushing between phone calls, I sought a second opinion from my old doctor immediately. He told me that the medicine I was given was not for MRSA and that several of my glands were swollen. I was given a medication that could treat both normal staph and MRSA (a much more insidious form of staph) to take instead of the one Dr. Mattice prescribed. I do not believe the visit to Dr. Mattice accomplished anything for my health, but it gets worse. Although they told me I owed them no money (because of my $0 co-pay in-network), later Blue Cross denied the claim for the visit. This is because they are in fact out-of-network for my plan. A call to their billing department basically resulted in, them saying I should have verified. I told them I *did* verify with their staff several times. After weeks of hounding their billing department, they agreed that the error was their staff's fault, and even said the person who made the error no longer worked there, and the staff was undergoing retraining for this issue. Incredibly, despite admitting that they had made an error promising me they were in-network, and despite my printed receipt from them showing my co-pay of $0 for BCBS, they still (at the time of this writing) are demanding I pay them and have not made any overture toward even discounting the bill due to their "mistake". The billing manager told me Dr. Mattice's solution was for me to call BCBS and tell them to resubmit the claim as in-network, even though it is not. BCBS (logically) refused. This battle has been ongoing for weeks now, and I do not feel that I have been treated with even a modicum of respect from Dr. Mattice's operation during this process. If they had not promised me I was in-network, I never would have made the mistake of going to this physician, and would not have received what I consider to be sub-par treatment and a complete lack of respect from the doctor and billing service. This could have happened to anyone. I believe that no matter what business you are in, if someone comes to you in good faith and you promise them something that turns out to not only not be true, but places a financial burden on the customer, you should take responsibility for your mistake and try to rectify it or at least mitigate it in some way. That is why I am writing this review, so others do not make the mistake I made and suffer the stress I am suffering as a result. If a provider cannot be trusted to accurately tell you whether or not your insurance is in-network, and he and his billing staff refuse to rectify their admitted mistake, those points alone are enough to convince me to warn others to stay away.
