Do not go to Eric Smith for services for your pet - Dr. Eric Smith was very callous, not informative and not professional in dealing with us. I wish that more people would post reviews so my family would not have been lead to such a tragedy.
My Yorkshire terrier was taken in to Dr. Eric Smith for a check up where after some discussions, he recommended my family dog as a “great candidate” for eye surgery. My dog had been developing some cataracts (but not yet fully formed) and thought this could help him down the line from not losing his vision. The “cataract fact sheet” that we were given just said that there was a 97% success rate with an increase in vision after the procedure and we were not informed of any negative complications (we all did extensive research on this as well). Prior to the surgery my dog was healthy and could see….3 weeks after the surgery my dog went completely blind in the left eye (his retina disintegrated) and there is no hope in getting the vision back, has lost nearly all his vision in his right eye (the remainder of which is to be lost) AND has developed glaucoma! He had low pressure his whole life and the pressure in one of his eyes more than doubled post-surgery.
Dr. Smith said that “he does not know” the cause of all these complications and says that they have nothing to do with the surgery. Worst of all is when we went back for follow up treatments for my dog, Dr. Eric Smith wrote out a detailed treatment for my dog to treat the inflammation in his eye that happened post-surgery (on top of everything else) and to hopefully prolong his not loosing the rest of his vision in the right eye….we returned home in the evening to notice that Dr. Eric Smith’s office had forgot to include on the essential eye drops for my dog in the bag – eye drops that are necessary for my dog’s health and that we paid for, so we had to take time off work to return back to the office the next day. This has really been an awful experience. Please be informed of post-op possible complications and do not get lens removal/insertion treatment for your animals unless it is a last resort. Dr. Smith will not admit his mal practice or even that my poor dog is going through all of this because of post-op complications (which we understand can happen), and he mis-informed us by not telling us the complications that could arise post surgery. We would have never performed this surgery, at least not in both eyes, had we been informed.
