I have seen Dr. Huempfner several times in the last few years. I have learned to clear my schedule for that day, make early appointments (preferably the first), bring a book, insist to wait in the waiting room (I waited once in my underwear for three hours!!!!) until the staff KNOW she is going to be to see you in 15 minutes, knowing it will be an hour, (though I got it down to 45 minutes last time). The staff can be really great when they know you know what to expect. When you see her she can seem cold and rushed (she goes back and forth to the hospital a lot), but don't take it personally and don't be afraid to be aggressive and ask questions. Feel free to remind or tell her of where you are in your treatment, she has a lot of patients and often is reading up on my file as she walks in the door. She may seem distracted because she is re-familiarizing herself as she is talking to you. It saves a lot of time if I just tell her what we did or are doing. Once her focus is on you she is knowledgeable and answers your questions thoroughly; she can even be kind. Try to be prepared beforehand with questions and you will want to be sure she goes through all your options; she doesn’t always remember I don’t know everything she does and tends to make decisions for you. I have seen her about 10+ times the past 2 years and I sound like I’m defending a bad boyfriend, except I like the fact that she doesn’t want to be my buddy. I also like the fact that she is no nonsense and well educated about integrative medicine and Ayurveda. Communicating can be a bit difficult on some days, just be aggressive and show no fear. I think she respects that, she may also think I’m a pain, but that doesn’t matter and hopefully she doesn’t take it personally ;-) After learning this approach I now leave feeling informed and confidant I’m in good hands. She is an excellent doctor and the best doctors keep a bit aloof from their patients.
