Francis D Ferdinand, MD, FACS, FACC, joined UPMC in 2018 as the Director of Cardiac Surgery at the Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC Hamot. Dr Ferdinand earned his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed a residency in general surgery at The Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in thoracic surgery and research fellowship at The University of Chicago and was then selected as a senior registrar in cardiac surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital and National Heart and Lung Institute in London, U.K. during which he was a visiting fellow in cardiac surgery at Hopital Broussais in Paris, France.
